Okanagan Lake foam likely caused by rainfall and runoff

White foam observed on Okanagan Lake near the Canoe Bay Pump Station stormwater outfall between August 22 and 23 is likely the result of recent rainfall following a prolonged dry period.

Stacey Raftus, a communications officer for the Regional District of North Okanagan, stated that the foam was likely caused by increased runoff washing accumulated dust, dirt, and other materials from roads and hard surfaces into the stormwater system. The high velocity of water discharging from the outfall may have also contributed to the foam formation.

An inspection of the Canoe Bay Pump Station construction site found no evidence of leaks, spills, or erosion. While no residual foam or film was visible during a site visit on August 23, water samples were collected from the outfall and the lake for standard quality testing to determine if any harmful materials were present.
