Two dead in Piper Cub plane crash in Washington mountainside
The wreckage of a 1976 Piper Cub, a small single-engine propeller plane, has been located on a remote mountainside in Washington State. The aircraft went missing on Saturday, Oct. 10, while traveling from Penticton, British Columbia, to Grangeville, Idaho.
Authorities have identified the two occupants as 61-year-old pilot Nicholas Grachanin and passenger Jim Merik. The Okanogan County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the wreckage was discovered on the afternoon of Sunday, Oct. 11, and both men were found deceased.
The search operation involved extensive resources, including the Washington State Department of Transportation’s Air Search & Rescue, the Civil Air Patrol, Okanogan County Emergency Management, and the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation. Search efforts were aided by cell phone forensics to narrow down the location after the plane lost communication with Seattle Centre air traffic control.
