OKI Police intensify patrols and detain suspects amid South Sumatra land fires

The Ogan Komering Ilir (OKI) Police are intensifying efforts to combat forest and land fires (karhutla) in South Sumatra. As of September 21, 2026, data from the Ministry of Forestry indicated 759 hotspots in the province, with 508 located in peatlands and 251 in mineral lands.

To address the rising threat, the OKI Police have strengthened patrols and early detection measures in collaboration with the TNI, BPBD, and Manggala Agni. Police Chief AKBP Eko Rubiyanto has emphasized the importance of community cooperation and warned against the practice of clearing land through burning.

Several individuals have been detained for illegal land burning intended for rice cultivation. Suspects include a 59-year-old in Pampangan, a 33-year-old in Sungai Menang, and an 18-year-old in SP Padang. Those found guilty of violating environmental protection laws face significant legal consequences, including prison sentences ranging from three to ten years and substantial fines.
