Okinawa local elections begin with 21 town council races

Local elections in Okinawa have officially commenced with the announcement of 21 town council races and three mayoral elections. A total of 288 candidates have entered the fray, intensifying the political atmosphere across the prefecture following the recent gubernatorial election.

The Japanese Communist Party has fielded 10 candidates across nine towns, aiming to secure more seats to support Governor Denny Tamaki’s administration. Candidates have focused their campaigns on issues including economic support for small businesses, the rising cost of living, and opposition to military expansion. Specific concerns raised by candidates include the environmental impact of PFAS contamination linked to US military bases and the noise pollution caused by Osprey flights.

While campaigning has ramped up, some confusion has been reported among voters regarding the scheduling of early voting due to the overlapping timelines of different election cycles.
