Okinawa local elections begin with Ishigaki City Council race

The unified local elections in Okinawa Prefecture have commenced, with several city and town council elections officially announced on June 6. In Ishigaki City, 28 candidates have filed to run for the 22 available seats in the city council. A key focus of the Ishigaki race is whether the ruling forces supporting Mayor Yoshitaka Nakayama can maintain a majority in the assembly.

Key issues facing voters across the prefecture include regional economic revitalization, addressing population decline, childcare, and environmental concerns. In rural and island areas, agricultural promotion remains a critical challenge due to aging populations and rising costs. Tourism-heavy areas are also grappling with the impacts of overtourism and traffic congestion.

Security and military issues are prominent, particularly regarding the concentration of US military bases in Okinawa. Approximately 40% of surveyed candidates identified the revision of the Japan-US Status of Forces Agreement as a priority, especially concerning the investigation of PFAS contamination and transparency following military-related accidents. Other notable challenges include the low representation of women in local assemblies and the rise of uncontested elections due to a shortage of candidates.
