Okinawa U.S. military imposes curfew and alcohol ban after Marine murder arrest

U.S. military forces in Okinawa have announced significant disciplinary measures following the arrest of Lance Corporal Devin Jacob Ballard on suspicion of the robbery and murder of 39-year-old Anna Yagi. The incident, which occurred at a hotel in Naha, has sparked widespread outrage in Japan and prompted formal protests from the Japanese government.

Lt. Gen. Benjamin Watson, commander of the III Marine Expeditionary Force, ordered a 48-hour operational pause from Wednesday to Friday, during which all off-base liberty and alcohol consumption are prohibited. This period will be used for training personnel on standards, discipline, and community responsibility. Following this, a 30-day period of reflection will be implemented, featuring a nightly curfew from midnight to 5 a.m. for all U.S. personnel in Okinawa.

Okinawa Governor Genta Koja met with Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi to demand effective preventive measures and a review of the Japan-U.S. Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA). Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi described the crime as “extremely brutal and heinous.” The case has renewed long-standing tensions regarding the heavy U.S. military presence on the island.
