Oklahoma board narrowly rejects Jewish charter school application
The Oklahoma Statewide Charter School Board has narrowly rejected the application for Ben Gamla, a proposed Jewish virtual charter school. The 4-3 vote fell one vote short of the five votes required for approval, hindered by one absent member and one vacant seat.
The school, a project of former congressman Peter Deutsch, intended to combine traditional secular subjects with daily Jewish religious studies. The application follows a recent federal court ruling that temporarily barred Oklahoma from excluding charter schools solely based on their religious character, a decision that challenged the state's requirement that charter schools remain nonsectarian.
This development follows previous legal battles regarding religious charter schools in Oklahoma, specifically the case of St. Isidore of Seville, a Catholic virtual school that was blocked by the Oklahoma Supreme Court. While the Ben Gamla application has stalled, proponents view the legal challenges as a significant test case for the future of publicly funded religious education under evolving Supreme Court interpretations of the First Amendment.
