Oklahoma City Zoo Cuts Visiting Hours as Heat Wave Swells

The National Weather Service in Norman forecasts Oklahoma will experience heat index values of 105‑110 °F next week, well above seasonal highs. Heat advisories are expected to remain in effect, and officials advise residents to limit outdoor activity, stay hydrated and watch for signs of heat exhaustion.

Oklahoma City emergency medical services recorded 80 heat‑related calls this month, transporting 58 patients to hospitals. In response to the extreme temperatures, the Oklahoma City Zoo will shorten public visiting hours to 8 a.m. – 2 p.m. from Sunday through Thursday, while keeping summer camps and preschool programs operating as normal. The zoo urges visitors to use water refill stations and seek shade.

Health officials emphasize the risk of dizziness, nausea, thirst and weakness, urging the public to take precautions during the expected heat surge.
