Oklahoma coach Brent Venables defends offense after loss to Kentucky
Oklahoma head coach Brent Venables defended quarterback John Mateer and the Sooners' offensive performance following a 21-13 home loss to No. 15 Kentucky. Despite leading 13-7 entering the fourth quarter, Oklahoma surrendered 14 unanswered points, including a 41-yard interception return for a touchdown by Kentucky’s Jordan Castell.
Venables noted that while the team lost the turnover margin, he saw improvement in Mateer’s play. Mateer completed 15 of 20 passes for 167 yards and a touchdown in the first half before throwing three second-half interceptions. The team also struggled with offensive line play, resulting in five sacks, and a failed fake field goal attempt that ended in an interception.
Other notable performances included sophomore wide receiver Manny Choice, who led the team with 98 receiving yards on five catches. The rushing attack, led by Lloyd Avant, Tory Blaylock, and Jonathan Hatton Jr., contributed 67 yards on the ground.
