Oklahoma Drought Worsens Amid Heat, Threatening Lakes and Water Supplies

A prolonged heat wave and limited rainfall have pushed Oklahoma deeper into drought. The U.S. Drought Monitor reports that exceptional drought now covers 2.25% of the state, while moderate to extreme drought affects 59.83% of Oklahoma, up from 43.84% a week earlier. Abnormally dry conditions span 95.57% of the state, leaving only 4.43% drought‑free. Counties such as Washita, Kiowa, Beckham, Woodward and Roger Mills are among the hardest hit.

Lake conditions reflect the mixed impact: reduced water movement has produced clearer, greenish‑brown water that is appealing for watersports, yet the warmth and limited flow have raised concerns for anglers and water quality. Forecasts suggest continued high temperatures through September, with only a modest chance of rain improving the situation.
