Oklahoma election officials manage short voting window and security incident
Oklahoma voters face a limited four-day early voting window for the November 3 general election. The period runs from Wednesday, October 28, through Saturday, October 31. This timeframe is among the shortest in the United States, where the national average for early voting is approximately 20 days.
Oklahoma has historically struggled with low voter participation. In the 2020 general election, the state recorded a 55% turnout rate, the lowest in the country, while the 2022 midterm turnout fell to 40% of the voting-eligible population.
Separately, the Oklahoma State Capitol Complex was recently evacuated after the State Election Board Office received an envelope containing a white powdery substance. The Oklahoma Highway Patrol and other agencies responded to the report, but the substance was later determined to be non-hazardous. State Election Board Secretary Paul Ziriax confirmed that the incident did not impact the board's ability to conduct elections and that no staff members were harmed.
