Oklahoma offensive coordinator backs John Mateer despite turnovers

Oklahoma offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle has reaffirmed his support for quarterback John Mateer, stating that Mateer remains the team’s best option to win despite recent inconsistencies and turnovers. Mateer has been responsible for nine of the Sooners' 14 turnovers this season, including seven interceptions.

Arbuckle noted that while the team must eliminate “back-breaking errors” and “catastrophic errors,” he takes responsibility for play design and execution. The quarterback has faced challenges playing behind an injured offensive line, which has impacted performance in recent games, including a loss to Kentucky where Mateer threw three interceptions.

While Mateer remains the starter, attention has turned to backup Bowe Bentley, a highly regarded prospect from the class of 2026. Arbuckle described Bentley as a player who is “always learning” and remains hyper-focused on the game even while not playing.
