Oklahoma QB John Mateer faces pressure ahead of Texas matchup

Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer faces significant pressure heading into the Red River Rivalry against No. 1 Texas. After entering the season with high expectations as a Heisman contender, Mateer has struggled with consistency and ball security, committing six turnovers over his last three games.

Oklahoma’s offense has seen a decline against high-level competition, averaging only 11.5 points against Power Four opponents this season. During a recent 41-13 loss to Georgia, head coach Brent Venables admitted the coaching staff considered benching Mateer at halftime due to multiple turnovers. While Mateer remains the starter, the emergence of backups Whitt Newbauer and Bowe Bently during the bye week has intensified speculation regarding his position in the lineup.
