Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer faces turnover struggles ahead of Texas game

Oklahoma Sooners quarterback John Mateer is facing scrutiny regarding his performance and confidence ahead of the upcoming matchup against Texas. Through the first four games of the season, Mateer has struggled with turnovers, totaling six giveaways—four interceptions and two lost fumbles. This has contributed to Oklahoma ranking 136th nationally in turnover margin.

Head coach Brent Venables noted that Mateer’s confidence appears ‘bruised’ following a game against Georgia, where three first-half turnovers proved costly. Mateer has acknowledged the difficulty of his recent play, stating that while his process is correct, the results have not materialized.

As the Sooners prepare for a high-stakes game against the top-ranked Texas Longhorns, the team may need to rely on backup quarterback Whitt Newbauer, especially given the strength of the Texas defense, which ranks fourth nationally in quarterback sacks. Other key contributors like wide receiver Isaiah Sategna may also be vital in providing momentum through special teams play.
