Oklahoma defeats UTEP 51-0 in season opener

No. 10 Oklahoma opened their 2026 college football season with a dominant 51-0 shutout victory over UTEP at Gaylord Family — Oklahoma Memorial Stadium.

Quarterback John Mateer led the Sooners' offense, completing 11 of 17 passes for 225 yards and three touchdowns. His scoring connections included 40-yard passes to Rocky Beers, 34 yards to Isaiah Sategna, and 48 yards to Trell Harris. Sategna also contributed on special teams with an 88-yard punt return for a touchdown.

The Sooners' rushing attack, which had been a point of scrutiny during the offseason, recorded 170 yards on 39 attempts. Colorado State transfer Lloyd Avant provided the team's first score of the season with a 1-yard touchdown run.

UTEP struggled offensively, managing only 198 total yards and failing to convert any of their three field goal attempts. Oklahoma's defense maintained the shutout, bolstered by a fumble forced by Peyton Bowen. The Sooners are scheduled to face No. 16 Michigan next week.
