Nobel Prize in Medicine 2026 awarded to optogenetics pioneers

The 2026 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine has been awarded to Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann, and Georg Nagel for their pioneering work in optogenetics. This technique allows scientists to control the activity of specific neurons in living brains using light, fundamentally transforming neuroscience.

The discovery originated from the study of the unicellular green alga Chlamydomonas. Hegemann and Nagel identified a light-sensitive protein called channelrhodopsin, which opens an ion channel and generates an electrical impulse when exposed to blue light. Karl Deisseroth later expanded this research by successfully introducing the channelrhodopsin gene into the nerve cells of rats and mice, creating a light-controlled biological switch.

Optogenetics enables researchers to map neural circuits with unprecedented precision, helping to unravel how specific neurons influence memory, emotions, and behavior. The technology is already being used globally in laboratories and holds potential for medical treatments, including the partial restoration of vision in individuals with certain types of genetic blindness.
