Oktoberfest begins in Munich with six million visitors expected
The 191st Oktoberfest has officially commenced in Munich, with organizers expecting approximately six million visitors over the 16-day festival ending October 4. Munich Mayor Dominik Krause opened the event by tapping the first keg, a tradition he performed with just two strikes.
Security measures have been heightened this year, including the deployment of approximately 600 police officers and the use of artificial intelligence cameras to monitor crowd density. Drones and knives are prohibited on the grounds.
Economic and health updates include a rise in beer prices, with a one-liter mug costing between 14.80 and 15.90 euros. For the first time, the city is offering on-site flu and COVID-19 vaccinations at the festival's medical station.
Early reports from the opening day indicate significant activity for emergency services, with approximately 50 medical interventions recorded, including cases of minor injuries, alcohol-related issues, and one individual transported to the hospital for cardiovascular distress.
