Oktoberfest crowds linked to rise in respiratory infections in Munich

Data from the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) indicates a rise in respiratory illnesses in the Munich area during the Oktoberfest period, even when infection rates remain low in the rest of Germany. This phenomenon is attributed to crowded beer tents, close proximity between people, and limited ventilation.

Health experts note that while influenza typically peaks later in the season, visitors are at a high risk of contracting common colds, coronaviruses, or RSV through droplet infections. Alcohol consumption may also weaken the immune system, increasing vulnerability.

To mitigate risks, medical professionals recommend frequent hand washing, using hand sanitizer, and maintaining distance where possible. Experts suggest that outdoor areas pose a lower risk than enclosed tents, as aerosols disperse more quickly in open air.
