Oktoberfest Dirndl bow placement serves as social code

The placement of the bow on a Dirndl apron serves as a traditional social code for visitors at the Oktoberfest. According to Axel Munz, managing director of the traditional clothing manufacturer Angermaier, the position of the bow can indicate a woman's relationship status.

Specifically, a bow tied on the left signifies that the wearer is single or open to contact, while a bow on the right indicates she is married, engaged, or in a relationship. A bow tied in the middle was traditionally associated with virginity or used by those wishing to remain mysterious, and a bow tied in the back often signifies that the wearer is a widow or a server.

While there is no direct equivalent for men, some modern regional interpretations suggest that lapel pins can convey status: an Edelweiss pin represents loyalty and being in a relationship, whereas a pretzel pin signifies being single. Although widely regarded as a long-standing tradition, experts note that this specific bow code is a relatively recent development, appearing around the 1980s.
