Oktoberfest faces rising cocaine use and safety concerns

The Oktoberfest in Munich is facing challenges regarding drug use and personal safety. Authorities in Bavaria report a significant surge in cocaine availability and consumption. According to the Munich Public Prosecutor's Office, cocaine has become both cheaper and more pure, with prices dropping from approximately 93 euros per gram in 2021 to around 68 euros. Investigators note that cocaine use is no longer limited to specific social groups but has spread across various professional and social demographics.

In addition to drug-related issues, there are ongoing concerns regarding sexual offenses. Police reported 74 sexual offenses at the festival last year, averaging four to five cases per day. To address these issues, the organization ‘Sichere Wiesn’ provides a ‘safe space’ for women and girls. Operated by specialized counseling centers including Amyna, Imma, and the Munich Women's Emergency Call, the initiative offers support for victims of sexual or physical violence, as well as those experiencing psychological crises or general insecurity.
