Oktoberfest worker dies in free-fall tower accident

A 52-year-old security worker, identified as a Serbian national, died following an accident at the ‘Hangover’ free-fall tower ride during Munich’s 191st Oktoberfest. The incident occurred on Monday evening, September 21, 2026, around 9:50 PM. According to police reports, the man was reportedly in a restricted area of the attraction when he was struck and potentially crushed by a descending gondola. Although emergency responders successfully performed resuscitation on-site before transporting him to a Munich hospital, he later succumbed to his injuries.

Criminal investigators are currently examining the exact circumstances of the accident to determine why the employee was in the danger zone during operation. Police emphasized that festival visitors on the ride were not in danger at any point during the incident. A crisis intervention team was deployed to provide psychological support to eyewitnesses.

This tragedy marks the second ride-related incident at the festival this year. On the preceding Saturday, a separate malfunction involving a carousel left passengers suspended upside down for approximately two minutes due to a faulty sensor. The Oktoberfest, which began on September 19, is expected to attract approximately 6 million visitors and will continue through October 4.
