Oktoberfest: Regulations for cannabis use and health safety
As the Oktoberfest in Munich prepares for its 2026 iteration, authorities have outlined strict regulations regarding substance use and public health. Under the ‘Bavarian Cannabis Limitation Act’ passed in July 2024, the festival grounds remain a cannabis-free zone. While possession of up to 25 grams is permitted for adults, consumption on the festival grounds is prohibited and carries a fine of 500 euros, which can escalate to over 5,000 euros for repeat offenses.
Additionally, a strict smoking ban remains in effect inside beer tents, with violations potentially resulting in fines of up to 1,000 euros. Visitors are encouraged to use designated smoking areas or balconies.
Health officials and the Robert Koch Institute have also noted the ‘Wiesn effect,’ where respiratory illnesses such as colds, COVID-19, and RSV typically spike in the Munich area following the festival due to crowded conditions and droplet transmission. Medical experts recommend frequent hand washing, using disinfectant, and maintaining distance where possible to mitigate infection risks.
