Oktoberfest ride decorations modified following sexism debate

Operators of the Teufelsrad ride at the Munich Oktoberfest have modified long-standing decorations following a sexism debate. The decision follows a determination by the city's equality office regarding four 80-year-old papier-mâché female figures that were deemed offensive due to their revealing clothing, including bikinis and short dresses.

To address these concerns, the figures have been repainted with longer skirts and cycling shorts. The move has drawn criticism from festival fans and various political factions in the Munich City Council, including the CSU, SPD, and Greens, who have expressed skepticism regarding the effectiveness of the change.

Critics argue that the focus on modifying decorations distracts from more pressing safety issues at the festival. Reports indicate that police record up to 80 sexual offenses at the Oktoberfest annually, and in 2025, approximately 350 women sought assistance through the ‘Sichere Wiesn’ (Safe Oktoberfest) initiative.
