Oktoberfest showmen protest redesign of ride figures

A dispute is escalating at the Munich Oktoberfest regarding the redesign of ride figures. The conflict arose after authorities requested changes to certain figures to avoid racist and sexist stereotypes.

In response, the Federal Association of Showmen and Market Traders (Bundesverband Schausteller und Marktkaufleute) has announced a boycott of the traditional Oktoberfest tour. In a letter to the Munich Economic Department, the association described the demands as “censorship measures” and “forced pin-up artistry.”

Association President Patrick Arens stated that the design of a business premises is a core competency of the entrepreneur, who bears the economic risk. The association represents approximately 60 to 70 businesses at the festival, though this constitutes only a portion of the total participants, which includes hundreds of vendors and market traders.
