ECLAC concludes regional session in Dominican Republic
The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) concluded its 41st session in Santiago de los Caballeros, Dominican Republic, focusing on regional integration and economic resilience. During the meeting, the Dominican Republic assumed the presidency of ECLAC for the 2026-2028 period.
Foreign Minister Víctor Bisonó emphasized the need to transform political consensus into concrete public policies, particularly regarding intra-regional trade, digital transformation, and climate resilience. He called for increased investment and better access to financing to address the specific vulnerabilities of the Caribbean.
ECLAC Executive Secretary José Manuel Salazar-Xirinachs highlighted that the region must anticipate global geopolitical shifts rather than merely reacting to them. He noted that while Latin America and the Caribbean possess strategic assets—including critical minerals, biodiversity, and human talent—these will only drive development through strong institutions and effective governance.
Key discussions included the impact of artificial intelligence on productivity and the importance of fiscal sustainability. The Santiago de los Caballeros Resolution was adopted, instructing the Executive Secretariat to conduct studies to strengthen national capacities. Panama is scheduled to host the 42nd session in 2028.
