Olanchito advances palm processing and renewable energy projects
The municipality of Olanchito, Yoro, is advancing two major infrastructure projects aimed at boosting the local economy and energy capacity.
ASIPALMA has commenced construction on the town's first palm oil processing plant. The project, which involves components manufactured in Malaysia, is expected to be fully operational within 18 to 24 months. Local producers view the facility as a vital step in strengthening the productive chain and creating new employment opportunities.
Simultaneously, local authorities have approved the Las Lagunas energy project. This initiative involves an estimated investment of $500 million to $600 million to develop a system combining 190 megawatts of solar generation with water pump storage. Mayor Juan Carlos Molina stated the goal is for Olanchito to become a major hub for electricity generation in the country. The project's completion remains contingent on securing financing, obtaining environmental licenses, and establishing necessary transmission infrastructure.
