Olancho residents and lawmakers demand resumption of Salamá Hospital construction
Residents and lawmakers in Olancho, Honduras, have launched a signature campaign to demand that the government under President Nasry Asfura reactivate the construction of the Salamá Hospital. The project, which began during the administration of former President Xiomara Castro, is currently suspended.
Construction was halted following orders from oversight bodies, including the Superior Court of Accounts (TSC) and the Public Ministry, which are investigating potential irregularities, contract issues, and cost overruns. While officials noted that investigations into these matters must proceed to establish responsibility, proponents of the project argue that the hospital's completion should not be delayed by legal inquiries.
Jorge Cálix, leader of the Liberal Party parliamentary group, announced plans to convene deputies from affected departments, including Ocotepeque and Santa Bárbara, to seek answers regarding the paralysis of several public hospital projects. Cálix emphasized that providing healthcare is a state obligation and called for a clear roadmap to conclude the works.
