Olbia medical team implants year-long glucose sensor
Medical professionals in Olbia, Sardinia, have performed the first implantation of a subcutaneous glucose sensor capable of lasting twelve months. This procedure, conducted at the San Giovanni di Dio healthcare facility by a team led by Dr. Giancarlo Tonolo, marks only the second such implantation in the Sardinia region.
The device is inserted under the skin of the upper arm via a brief outpatient procedure under local anesthesia. Unlike previous subcutaneous sensors that lasted a maximum of six months, this new technology doubles the interval between replacements. It continuously monitors glucose levels and transmits data wirelessly to the patient's smartphone.
Key features include vibration alerts for hypoglycemic episodes and a removable transmitter. The system also supports telemedicine, allowing healthcare providers to remotely monitor glycemic trends and manage patient care more effectively.
