Old El Paso seasoning mix criticized for high sugar and salt content

Nutritionist Sophie Morris has drawn significant attention on social media for criticizing the ingredient composition of popular fajita seasoning mixes. Using Old El Paso Smoky BBQ Fajita Seasoning Mix as a primary example, Morris highlighted that the product's label lists sugar and salt as the first two ingredients, meaning they are present in higher quantities than any other components.

According to the product declaration, actual spices account for only approximately 6.1% of the total mixture. The remaining volume consists of sugar, salt, onion powder, hydrolyzed soy protein, and various additives such as citric acid, flavorings, and maltodextrin. Morris noted that while these products are marketed as convenient seasoning solutions, consumers may be paying premium prices—around 1.80 euros per packet—for ingredients they likely already possess in their kitchens.

Morris also extended her critique to more affordable alternatives found at Dunnes Stores, noting that even cheaper options often share a similar profile where salt and sugar dominate the ingredient list over actual spices.
