Oldambt council to hold emergency meeting on public safety

The Oldambt municipal council has scheduled an extraordinary meeting for August 26 to address rising safety concerns in the municipalities of Winschoten and Beerta. The initiative, supported by all political parties, was proposed by Mandy Meertens of the VVD following a series of recent incidents.

In Winschoten, unrest has grown following a violent incident in the city center where a 32-year-old man was arrested for allegedly assaulting several women. In Beerta, residents have reported tension caused by youth nuisance, including graffiti on vehicles and a recent fight at a campsite. These incidents have led some residents to avoid certain areas, such as the Pieter Smitbrug, after dark.

The meeting is intended to be public, allowing residents to observe the council's deliberations and participate in the development of new safety policies.
