Oldambt politicians debate permanent Lenin statue in Oostwold

Political debate has emerged in Oldambt regarding the permanent placement of a nine-meter-tall bronze statue of Vladimir Lenin in Oostwold. The monument is intended to be part of a historical narrative concerning the 'Graanrepubliek' (Grain Republic) and its communist history.

Simeon Naaijer, chairman of the CDA faction, has raised concerns about the appropriateness of the statue. He argues that while the communist history of the region should be acknowledged, Lenin had no direct historical connection to Oldambt and was responsible for political repression and mass killings. Naaijer questions why a figure associated with such violence should be linked to the local history.

In response, Jan Kenter, chairman of the United Communist Party (VCP), argues that the statue should be viewed in its historical context. He suggests the monument serves as a reference to the past rather than an endorsement of Lenin's actions, asking whether the community wishes to focus solely on the individual or the broader historical narrative.
