Oldebroek ends LGBTQI+ policy and rainbow flag hoisting

The municipal council of Oldebroek has officially decided to end its LGBTQI+ policy, a move that includes the cessation of hoisting the rainbow flag on Coming Out Day. The decision followed a debate that drew significant public attention and over one hundred letters from concerned citizens.

Following the council's decision, Alderman Tom de Nooijer of the Christelijk Verbond Oldebroek party sparked further controversy by posting an image on X depicting a rainbow flag with a prohibition sign, calling the decision 'historic'. The post was subsequently deleted, but drew sharp criticism from political figures.

State Secretary Eric van der Burg condemned the post, stating it was serious for an alderman to celebrate such a decision while representing the college. ChristenUnie faction leader Geerco André also described the social media post as 'offensive and indecent'. Prime Minister Rob Jetten addressed the broader context, emphasizing the need for respect and dialogue, while noting reports of declining acceptance of LGBTQI+ individuals among youth.
