Oldebroek ends LGBTI policy amid rainbow flag thefts

In the Netherlands, Coming Out Day has sparked significant local debate and demonstrations. In the municipality of Oldebroek, a new governing coalition including the Christelijk Verbond Oldebroek party has decided to end LGBTI policies, including the practice of flying the rainbow flag at the town hall. While Mayor Tanja Haseloop-Amsing stated the move is intended to foster dialogue rather than reject the community, residents organized protests to show support.

Following these policy changes, reports emerged of multiple rainbow flags being stolen or vandalized in Oldebroek, including a flag at the Kruiskerk in Wezep. Local residents and organizers have reported that some flagpoles were even damaged during these incidents.

On a national level, the rainbow flag was flown at the Tweede Kamer (the Dutch House of Representatives) following a parliamentary vote. Meanwhile, the Dutch police participated in the day by lighting various stations in rainbow colors and flying the Progress flag to demonstrate their commitment to inclusivity and to encourage the reporting of discrimination.
