Oldebroek protests municipal ban on rainbow flag and LGBTQI+ policy

The municipal council of Oldebroek, formed by the conservative Protestant SGP, the Christian party CVO and local party ABO, voted to stop raising the rainbow flag on official buildings and to scrap the municipality’s LGBTQI+ diversity policy. Councilors described the flag as “un‑Christian” and said it would not be flown on International Coming‑Out Day.

On 10 July 2026, around 600 residents gathered in front of the town hall, waving rainbow flags to oppose the decision. The protest was organised by local resident Kjeld Mooi, who said many people feel unsafe and that the municipality should protect them. Oldebroek is reported as the first Dutch municipality to eliminate its LGBTQI+ policy and cease the flag‑raising tradition.
