Older Americans' labor force participation declines amid stock market boom

The employment rate among Americans aged 55 and older has seen a significant decline, dropping from 39.2% in February 2022 to 36.9% by July 2026, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics data.

Economists from Bank of America suggest this trend is driven by a booming equity market. The S&P 500 has more than tripled since its 2020 lows, potentially providing older workers with sufficient retirement savings to exit the workforce. Financial experts note that many individuals are reaching psychological milestones in their 401(k) balances, which encourages retirement.

This shift marks a reversal of a decades-long trend where the older workforce grew steadily from the mid-1980s through the 2010s.
