Older LGBTQ+ community in Britain faces identity and care risks
A report from the Centre for Ageing Better indicates that the growing older LGBTQ+ community in England faces significant challenges, including poorer health, limited finances, and increased social isolation compared to the general older population.
Concerns have been raised regarding the potential for individuals to be forced “back into the closet” when accessing care due to fears of homophobia. Advocates note that some seniors hide personal items, such as wedding photos or pride flags, when receiving home care or moving into residential facilities to avoid discrimination. There are also calls for better training for medical and care staff to ensure they are equipped to support LGBTQ+ individuals.
In response to these needs, the LGBT Foundation is involved in the development of Kindred House, a specialized social housing scheme for individuals over 55, which is scheduled to open in Manchester next year.
