Oleander care: managing water saturation and pruning techniques

Proper care for potted oleanders (Nerium oleander) involves managing water levels and pruning techniques to ensure plant health and density.

To prevent root asphyxiation caused by excessive rain, it is critical to act within 48 to 72 hours of saturation. Overwatering can lead to root necrosis, where roots turn black and soft due to a lack of oxygen. Immediate steps to save a drowning plant include emptying saucers and cache-pots, and elevating the container to allow drainage.

For older plants that have become sparse at the base with bare stems, a specific pruning method known as the ‘rule of thirds’ can rejuvenate the architecture. Instead of only trimming the tops, gardeners should replace one-third of the oldest, thickest stems by cutting them close to the ground. This encourages new growth from the base and helps restore a dense, bushy appearance.
