Oleander plant waste poses inhalation risks when burned

Burning oleander (Nerium oleander) branches poses a significant health risk due to the release of toxic substances in the smoke. All parts of the plant, including leaves, flowers, and stems, contain cardiac glycosides such as oleandrin.

These toxins affect the sodium-potassium pump in heart cells, similar to certain cardiac medications. Inhalation of smoke from incomplete combustion can lead to nausea, vomiting, heart rhythm disturbances, or even cardiac arrest. The toxicity remains active in the plant even after the branches have dried.
