OLED technology explained: benefits and definitions
Organic EL (OLED) technology is increasingly common in modern devices such as smartphones and laptops. The term ‘EL’ stands for ‘electroluminescence,’ referring to the property of organic materials that emit light when an electric current is applied. ‘OLED’ is an abbreviation for ‘Organic Light-Emitting Diode.’
Unlike LCD screens, OLED displays do not require a backlight, allowing for thinner and lighter designs. They also offer superior black color expression because pixels can be turned off completely. However, they are susceptible to ‘burn-in’ if static images are displayed for extended periods, though manufacturers implement various prevention technologies.
In the consumer market, OLED technology is expanding into more affordable mobile monitors. For example, JAPANNEXT offers a 13.3-inch Full HD OLED mobile monitor that provides high color accuracy and deep contrast at a competitive price point.
