OLED vs QLED: Key differences in display technology
Choosing between OLED and QLED television technologies depends on viewing environments and specific usage needs. OLED utilizes self-emissive pixels that can turn off completely, providing perfect blacks and high contrast, making it ideal for cinematic viewing in dark rooms. However, QLED technology, which uses an LCD panel with a quantum dot layer and separate backlighting, typically offers much higher peak brightness, making it more effective in brightly lit rooms with significant sunlight.
While QLED excels in brightness, OLED provides superior color depth and tonal transitions in dark scenes. Users should note that OLED televisions require a constant power connection to perform essential automated maintenance, such as pixel calibration and service cycles. Physically unplugging an OLED TV from the wall can interrupt these processes, potentially leading to uneven lighting, image retention, or permanent screen burn-in.
