Oleshky humanitarian crisis: EU warns of horrific conditions in occupied city
European Commissioner Hadjia Lahbib has described the humanitarian situation in the occupied Ukrainian city of Oleshky as ‘horrific.’ The city, located in the Kherson region along the Dnipro River, is currently under a blockade by Russian forces.
Ukrainian officials report that approximately 2,000 civilians, including about 50 children, are being held in the city without reliable access to food, clean water, electricity, or essential medicine. Kherson Governor Oleksandr Procudyn stated that Russian forces have mined access roads and utilized drones to target individuals attempting to enter or leave the area. Furthermore, Ukrainian Ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets noted that Russia has rejected Ukrainian proposals to facilitate civilian evacuations.
The UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine confirmed that residents have faced severe shortages of essential goods for months. While the Kremlin has acknowledged supply issues in the city, it maintains that the Russian military is working to resolve them. In response to the blockade, the Ukrainian military has reportedly used drones to deliver limited supplies of food and medicine to the area.
