Olga Sánchez Cordero criticizes Mexico's 4T movement and reforms
Olga Sánchez Cordero, a retired Supreme Court Justice and current Morena federal deputy, has criticized the direction of the ‘Cuarta Transformación’ (4T) movement, stating it has “lost its rhythm and mode.” Having served in all three branches of the Mexican government, Sánchez Cordero announced she will leave public service on August 31, 2027.
She expressed significant disagreement with the judicial and electoral reforms promoted by Andrés Manuel López Obrador and President Claudia Sheinbaum. Describing the judicial reform as a “brutal, emotional shock,” she argued that while reform was necessary, the current model is flawed. She specifically criticized the selection process for judges and magistrates, questioning the use of a lottery system and the lack of mechanisms to ensure candidates possess high-level judicial experience.
Regarding electoral reform, Sánchez Cordero warned that provisions allowing for the annulment of elections due to foreign interference lack clear definitions, potentially leaving the law open to broad political interpretation. She also noted that her legislative proposals for modifications were rejected, citing that parliamentary leadership indicated the project would not be changed.
