Olga Tokarczuk releases new novel addressing Poland's multicultural history
Nobel laureate Olga Tokarczuk has released her latest novel, ‘Świata jest za dużo’ (There is Too Much World), published by Wydawnictwo Literackie. The 688-page book was premiered at the Centennial Hall in Wrocław.
Set in post-war Lower Silesia starting in 1946, the narrative explores the complex social fabric of regions like Wałbrzych as Europe attempted to rebuild following World War II. The novel depicts a landscape where Poles, Germans, Jews, and migrants from various parts of Europe—including repatriates from Lwów and reemigrants from France—coexisted amidst displacement and shifting borders.
Tokarczuk uses the setting to examine the multicultural past of Poland, highlighting the diverse languages, customs, and traumas of the era. The work addresses the tensions, mistrust, and anti-Semitism present in the post-war society, challenging monolithic national myths by focusing on those whose lives were uprooted by war and resettlement.
