Olive oil sector in Montenegro faces pest threats and educational initiatives
In Montenegro, the olive oil sector is seeing both educational advancements and emerging agricultural challenges. The House of Olives (Kuća maslina) in Old Bar recently hosted a Summer School of Oleotechnology. The program, designed for students from the University of Digital Science (UDG) and young entrepreneurs, covered the entire production cycle, including harvesting, modern processing, quality assessment, and nutritional applications.
Simultaneously, agricultural monitoring in the Bar and Ulcinj regions has detected an increase in the olive fruit fly population. Laboratory inspections of fruit samples from locations such as Valdanos and Bar revealed active infestation rates, with some sites showing up to 6.6% infestation. Due to the rising fly numbers and changing weather conditions, producers in affected areas have been advised to implement chemical treatments using deltamethrin-based preparations to protect their crops.
