Olive oil consumption and import trends in Brazil
Olive oil consumption is rising in Brazil, with the country importing 80,768 tons during the 2024/25 harvest, representing approximately 9% of global imports and 3.1% of global consumption. Between October 2025 and March 2026, Brazilian imports saw a 40.5% increase compared to the previous period.
Nutrition experts, including Cintya Bassi from São Cristóvão Saúde, highlight that olive oil is a source of monounsaturated fats, primarily oleic acid, which is beneficial for cardiovascular health. Virgin and extra virgin oils contain phenolic compounds that act as antioxidants, though their concentration varies based on olive variety, maturation, and storage conditions.
Common misconceptions regarding olive oil include the idea that higher levels of spiciness or bitterness automatically indicate superior quality; while these sensory traits can relate to phenolic compounds, they are not sole indicators of quality. Additionally, olive oil is suitable for various cooking methods, including sautéing.
