Olive oil prices and conservation tips for consumers
In Spain, Mercadona has emerged as one of the most economical options for purchasing extra virgin olive oil (EVOO), particularly in three-liter containers. According to October reference prices, Mercadona’s one-liter white-label bottle is priced at 4.35 euros, nearly matching Carrefour’s 4.34 euros. Other retailers such as Alcampo (4.44 euros), Consum (4.45 euros), and Dia (4.45 euros) show slightly higher costs per liter.
Regarding product quality, cardiologist Aurelio Rojas advises that improper storage can degrade the bioactive compounds of EVOO. He warns against keeping oil near heat sources, as exposure to heat, light, and oxygen diminishes its health benefits. To preserve its properties, the oil should be stored in a cool, dry, and opaque container. Rojas also notes that while EVOO is excellent for cooking due to its high oleic acid content and smoke point, it should not be heated excessively or reused once it begins to smoke.
