Oliver Bierhoff criticizes Bundesliga competitiveness
Former German Football Association (DFB) director Oliver Bierhoff has stated that many national football leagues, including the Bundesliga, have become “boring” due to a lack of competition. In an interview with Sports Illustrated, Bierhoff noted that top clubs such as FC Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain have distanced themselves too far from their competitors.
Bierhoff, who has advised the NFL's New England Patriots since 2023, suggested that European football could benefit from adopting American sports models. He specifically cited the draft principle and salary caps as potential tools to limit the growing financial gap between clubs. He observed that while German football emphasizes solidarity, the economic divide continues to widen.
