Oliver Helander fails to qualify for European javelin final

Finnish javelin thrower Oliver Helander failed to qualify for the European Athletics Championships final in Birmingham. His best valid throw in the qualifying round was 78.43 meters, leaving him in 15th place. He missed the final qualification mark by approximately half a meter.

Helander had recently been experimenting with a technical change, moving away from a diving technique used in 2022 back toward a standing technique to improve his posture and timing. Despite this adjustment, his performance in the qualifiers fell short of expectations.

Former coach and javelin specialist Tero Pitkämäki, who was present at the event, expressed surprise at the performance, noting that Helander’s throw appeared unexpectedly soft despite having no obvious technical flaws. Following the competition, Helander indicated that his professional career may be coming to an end.
