Oliver Outlaws expansion hockey team prepares for inaugural season
Jake Gushue has been appointed as the head coach and general manager of the Oliver Outlaws, an expansion franchise in the newly established Western International Junior Hockey League (WIJHL). Gushue, 30, previously served as the head coach for Ontario’s Dryden Ice Dogs.
Training camp is scheduled to begin on Friday, Aug. 28, at the Oliver & District Arena, with approximately 60 players competing for roster spots. Gushue emphasized that recruitment focuses not only on skill and hockey IQ but also on character and maturity.
The Outlaws are set to debut their 2026-27 season on Friday, Sept. 18, playing at home against the Kelowna Chiefs. The WIJHL is composed of the Outlaws, the Enderby Icemen, and eight former members of the Kootenay International Hockey League.
