Mattie Music Group sues Olivia Dean's labels over alleged Bill Withers plagiarism

Mattie Music Group, the publisher of the late Bill Withers’ catalogue, has filed a copyright infringement lawsuit in a California federal court. The legal action alleges that British singer Olivia Dean’s song ‘I’ve Seen It’, from her 2025 album ‘The Art of Loving’, copies protected musical elements from Withers’ 1981 classic ‘Just the Two of Us’.

A musicologist commissioned by the publisher reportedly found ‘substantial similarities’ between the two tracks, including the repeated use of a distinctive melody. The complaint argues that the similarities are too striking to be a coincidence or the result of independent creation, noting that the widespread popularity of the original song provided a ‘reasonable opportunity’ for the musicians to have encountered it.

Notably, the lawsuit does not name Olivia Dean or her co-writers, Bastian Langebæk and Max Wolfgang, as defendants. Instead, it targets the companies responsible for the song’s distribution and publishing, including Capitol Records, Universal Music Group, Sony Music Publishing, and Kobalt Music Publishing America, Inc. The plaintiff is seeking financial damages and has requested an injunction to restrict the future use of the song.
